Prairie State Canoeists
A Northeast Illinois Canoe and Kayak Club
Cancelled - low water and high heat index makes for unfavorable conditions... Date: Sunday, August 29, 2021 Leaders: Sherri Graham and John AndersonDetails: While this may be a little far for a day trip...This river has had water while most others in the area haven't...We did this trip on July 25 and it was nice; we haven't combined the 2 day trips into a weekend with camping in 6 years because of issues with camping at Kankakee River State Park…but we recently found out that camping is now available!! YAY!!! (Also see trip listing for Saturday, August 28…join us for one or both days. If you would like to join us for camping, let us know ASAP as we MUST make reservations early...) This area is part of the Grand Kankakee Marsh that has been in planning phase for years...we have lost track of recent developments but will try to find updated information before our day on the water together. The view at the put-in is rather amazing. When you look upstream you see the Kankakee River Ditch in Indiana that was engineered by the US Army Corps of Engineers; when you look downstream, you see the natural curves and shoreline of the portion in Illinois. The stretch has some cottages on it but if you look at the opposite shore it is undeveloped/wild...and it is usually quiet. Directions: Details will be sent upon registration. Carshift at 10:00 AM; please call/e-mail if you plan to attend-especially if you want to camp or join us for breakfast.
